About the Artists:

The NY Arabic Chorus is a brand new community initiative by Brooklyn Maqam.  Led by Artistic Director Mona Miari, the NYAC strives to bridge connections and build community around shared love for Arabic music.  The chorus brings together vocalists of all levels and backgrounds to perform a wide variety of music from the Arab world.

Started in 2023, Orchestra Farha is an ensemble that focuses on Arabic music from the late 20th century, when Arabic music started to incorporate electric instruments such as organ and electric guitar. Drawing their repertoire from iconic Egyptian composers such as Baligh Hamdi and Hany Mehanna, Orchestra Farha embraces the electrified sounds of the 1970s and 80s of Egypt and across the Arab world.

Sardi Fardi (Odd Narrative) is Ayman Asfour’s latest project, blending classic Egyptian melodies with the dynamic energy of odd meters. By placing storytelling melodies and Arabic maqam in an unusual rhythmic structure, the project offers alternative ways for the listeners to experience the music, and challenges both the composer and the musicians to navigate new expressive possibilities within a familiar tradition. Since arriving in NYC, Asfour was lucky to link up with some incredible musicians through the Brooklyn Maqam community who have contributed greatly to this project’s musical process.

Zahra Alzubaidi is an Iraqi singer who performs a variety of Arabic styles, with a focus on music of Iraq. She has performed as a featured artist in prestigious music venues festivals throughout the US such as Habibi Festival, Global Fest and most recently the Brooklyn Folk Fest. She celebrates the Iraqi musical heritage by studying and preserving the tradition as well as performing and collaborating with other musicians from around the world.
