October 12: Deadline to apply to our pilot Arabic Takht (ensemble) Workshop led by Ameer Armaly! 

Participants will meet weekly for 6 sessions with a professional facilitator, and use the learning of real repertoire to deepen their understanding of Arabic music and its melody, ornamentation, arrangement, orchestration, accompaniment, and more.  This season will be facilitated by oudist and bandleader Ameer Armaly.  

The Ensemble Workshop will meet on Mondays at 7pm, on the following dates:

October 14: THE MAQAMCOMOPOSERS CLUB

The Maqamposers Club is a new project dedicated to performing the music of local composers.  New York has one of the most extensive Arabic music scenes in the United States, and it is the home to a large swath of musicians and composers crafting new original music that is rooted in maqam practices.  Whether traditional taqatiq and sama'iyyat or more modern inventions, this performance will entirely feature instrumental compositions by local composers that are currently based in NYC more…

 

 

 

 


October 20: Group Maqam Singing Classes: Maqam Lami (with Zahra AlZubaidi) 

This month's maqam class focuses on Maqam Lami, with special guest instructor Zahra AlZubaidi.Learn Arabic Music from master musician and educator Sami Abu Shumays, co-author of the acclaimed book Inside Arabic Music and creator of the YouTube series "Maqam Lessons." The group call-and-response singing format of these classes creates a non-judgmental environment that makes learning enjoyable. Non-musicians, beginner musicians, and experienced practitioners will all benefit from the insights and pragmatic approach Sami offers.

October 27: Khalid Rezick 

Experience the warmth and versatility of the trombone in Arabic music, presented in an intimate trio setting. Blending Arabic classical, Palestinian folk, and Jazz influences, Razick makes his mark as a distinctive voice in the Arabic Music scene.

Khalid Razick is a NYC-based trombonist whose debut EP ‘Eternal Flame,’ blends Palestinian folk melodies and jazz improvisation. Razick serves as a co-director of Souq El-Jum3a Collective, a Boston-based collective that strives to uplift the artistic community through the scope of Arabic music and culture.
